Notting Hill Carnival

The annual Notting Hill Carnival that eventually became an annual, cultural fixture by 1966 (all thanks to the initial start-up efforts of civil rights activist Claudia Jones and social worker Rhuane Laslett in the early sixties) is the mainstay celebratory expression of the natural exuberance that has come to characterise Caribbean Londoners and their way of life.  A lively procession from Powis Square moves along Ladbroke Grove, the floats and colourful throngs that light up the streets and the crowds of people marching in disguises creates vitality.  Marching to the sound of Calypso music and the rhythm of steel pan bands (introduced more than thirty years ago by the Russell Henderson Trio, Pepe Francis MBE, Sterling Betancourt MBE and Ralph Sherry MBE), this colourful, musical procession matches the tropical ingredients of the sunny food and diet on offer at the stalls.  This is experiencing the joys of Caribbean existence with joy.
